After David Lynch' passing, I revisited his short film Boat. I hadn't seen it for a decade and back then, I didn't think much of it. During my recent watch I was positively struck by the way it morphs from a home video into a piece of ethereal fiction, like only Lynch could do it. Here he wants to go fast. So fast that it'll turn night.
My friend Joachim also has a boat and he's on the water whenever there's even the slightest chance of sun. He doesn't go fast and has no interest in controlling the passage of time. On his boat, we go as slow as possible while enjoying the movements around us. The sun in the rippled water, the dogs checking us out with jealousy. This largely unedited roll was filmed on one of the first sunny days of the year.
Filmed on Kodak Tri-X. Only available as super8.
